Abuse in Education Helpline

Sexual abuse in any form is unacceptable. Following the concerning reports provided to the Everyone’s Invited website, detailing incidents of sexual assault in schools and colleges, the Government is taking immediate steps to support to those affected and ensure all schools are safe places.

That is why we are working with the NSPCC to launch a dedicated helpline for victims of sexual abuse to provide support and guidance.

The dedicated NSPCC Helpline - Report Abuse in Education – launched today (Thursday 1 April) and can be contacted by phone on 0800 136 663, or by emailing  help@nspcc.org.uk.

Teaching about relationships, sex and health

Support and training materials for schools to help train teachers on relationships, sex and health education.

From September 2020 all schools must consider the statutory guidance when teaching relationships, sex and health education.

Working with subject experts (ODS, 5.92KB), we have developed these training modules to help schools:

  • improve teacher knowledge and confidence when teaching this curriculum
  • develop and plan their curriculum

Sex Ed Forum advised Ofsted on indicators of success in RSE and what the evidence says. As a member you can watch Roary Pownall HMI speaking at our virtual conference ‘RSE North East’ via Youtube. 
 At all times when developing curriculum and teaching relationships, sex and health education, maintained schools must comply with their duties under the 1996 Education Act regarding political impartiality. The local authority, governing body and head teacher must:

  • forbid the pursuit of partisan political activities by junior pupils
  • forbid the promotion of partisan political views in the teaching of any subject in the school
  • take reasonably practicable steps to secure that where political issues are brought to the attention of pupils, they are offered a balanced presentation of opposing views

You should be aware that the meaning of political issues does not refer solely to the discussion of party politics. Schools are advised to consider the range of issues on which there could be political views, which may include global affairs, equalities issues, religion and economics.

The Independent School Standards, which apply to all independent schools (and most of which apply to academies) have similar provisions relating to the promotion of partisan political views and offering a balanced presentation of opposing views.

 

GHLL guide to implementation

GHLL has developed resources to support secondary, and FE settings in Gloucestershire to deliver the new statutory Relationships and Health Curriculum.

The flow chart below has been written to help schools and settings ensure their policies, practice and curriculum are meeting the statutory requirements.

Complete a subject review/audit

Audit current practice, mapping current coverage against statutory guidance

Consider the model of delivery at your setting. Ensure enough time is allocated in order to cover all the required elements of the RSE programme.

Map out coverage across all year groups. Consider the specific needs of your students/local community.

Build on the curriculum (spiral curriculum), year on year in order to embed knowledge, understanding, skills and values.

Audits of the Curriculum

From September 2020, schools must begin delivery of statutory Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education. 

To support this process GHLL have designed a simplified version of the curriculum requirements (beginning with RSE).
