SkillZONE

About

SkillZONE is a state-of-the-art safety education centre, which specifically addresses the underlying causes of unintentional injuries to both children and adults across Gloucestershire. It is designed to be an exciting, interactive and challenging environment where people can think about personal safety dilemmas, recognise dangers and consider how they can keep themselves safe.  There are 16 zones covering a range of hazards both in the home and outside, such as water, electricity and road safety as well as a magistrates court, police cell and custody suite to support initiatives to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour.

Working with GHLL, SkillZONE are producing specific schemes of work or lessons that can be delivered as a discrete package in SkillZONE.  One example is the “Healthy Lunch Box” lesson for key stage 2, in which children are given a budget to “buy” lunch in the fully equipped Mid-counties Co-op.  This lesson is being created by Jackie Kelly and can be measured during the session.  In NetZONE, we are working with Gloucestershire Police to help young people create safer social media profiles and avoid cyber bullying, which supports work already taking place in school. Further work is being undertaken with other Leading Teachers to produce a session in which we can support post 16 students setting up home for the first time, offering practical advice about home safety, landlord obligations, managing a budget and personal safety.  This partnership work will continue to grow and will bring benefits to the whole community.

Early Years Resources

SkillZONE provide a number of free educational resources for Eary Years settings. Some of the documents are designed to be shared with the families of pupils, either in hard copy or electronic form. The sharing of resources is actively encouraged to promote safety within the community.

The free resources cover a range of topics including:
  • Learning about hot and cold

  • Matches and Lighters

  • Fire alarms

  • Fire engines

  • Escape plans

Winter Safety Resources

The following two resources were produced by the Royal Life Saving Society and shared by SkillZONE:

Winter water safety booklet - A fun and colourful five-page booklet including activity sheets, safety facts, and a quiz.

Winter safety activity sheets - A printable two-page activity (included in the five-page booklet available above) which encourages children to identify dangers, complete a safety-themed wordsearch, and design their own snowman lifeguard!

SkillZONE Volunteering

SkillZONE is an interactive life skills centre in Tuffley, with an indoor village and activities to help children learn to stay safe at home, online and out in their community. Volunteers, aged 18 and over, are constantly required to show school children around the indoor safety village and deliver SkillZONE's safety education messages. To be considered as a volunteer, individuals must be able to spare 2.5 hours, twice a month, on days which are suitable to themselves. Full training and support is provided to help all volunteers to feel confident in their roles, and volunteering with SkillZONE will bring opportunities to meet new people, have fun, and make significant differences to the lives and safety of others.
